Blepharitis

Blepharitis causes some of the same symptoms as pink eye (conjunctivitis) but is not contagious like pink eye. Red, itchy, irritated eyes can also be indicative of an infection of the eyelids. Dandruff-like scales can form on the eyelashes in one form of blepharitis and can also be caused by dandruff of the scalp or rosacea.

Bacteria is the main cause and can cause either anterior or posterior blepharitis. The anterior condition occurs where the eyelashes attach at the front edge of the eyelid. The posterior condition occurs along the inner edge of the eyelid where it contacts the eyeball.

For symptoms of any type of eye infection, call Eye Care Associates of Bethany for a thorough examination. Diagnosing the exact cause of the blepharitis can be done by locating the exact area of the eye affected and the symptoms.

Treatment will include keeping the eyelids clean and crust-free. Warm compresses can be used to remove crusts. Then, gentle cleaning needs to be done with a special cleanser or water and a small amount of baby shampoo. If bacteria is suspected as the cause of the blepharitis, an antibiotic will be prescribed.
