Conjunctivitis

Pink eye is an extremely uncomfortable condition of the eye that almost everyone has experienced at least one time in their lives. The medical name for pink eye is conjunctivitis, as it is inflammation of the conjunctiva which is the tissue that makes up the inside of the eyelid. The redness and gritty feeling of the eyes are irritating but rarely affect vision.

Pink eye is extremely contagious and common in children who do not realize just how easy it can be spread to their friends. Due to the easy transmission from person to person, children who come down with pink eye are required to stay home from school until the infection has healed.

Besides being itchy, a crusty discharge also forms, especially in the morning when first waking up. The discharge can be gently wiped away with a warm washcloth.

Eye Care Associates of Bethany treats conjunctivitis in all ages for a faster healing period. Patients with pink eye should be careful to prevent spreading the infection to the rest of the family. A clean towel and washcloth should be used each day and never be shared with another person. Bedding and pillowcases should be washed often and especially after the infection has cleared. All cosmetics used during the infection should be thrown away to prevent reinfection.
