Contact Lenses

Vision correction is available in a wide variety of ways. Eyeglasses are one of the most common corrections chosen and are available in many different configurations for individual lifestyles. However, glasses are notorious for getting in the way of an active life, and some patients just prefer to avoid them in general.

Contact lenses are another common choice for vision correction when glasses are not desired. There are also several different types of contacts designed to improve vision for patients with different types of eye conditions. The doctors at Eye Care Associates of Bethany will help each patient chose the best type of contact lenses for their vision problems and prescription.

Contacts are available in daily or extended wear. Daily contacts must be taken out each night and replaced in the morning with a new pair. Extended wear can be worn for more than one day and sometimes even overnight. Patients with astigmatism require a special contact lens that is weighted on one side to prevent them from rotating freely on the eye and keep the prescription in focus.

To obtain contacts, the examination is slightly more involved and a little more expensive. Special equipment is needed to measure the surface of the eye for the exact fit needed. A different prescription must be calculated. Glasses correct vision from approximately 12 millimeters from the eye, whereas contacts correct vision directly from the surface of the eye.
