Dry-Eye
Tears perform several functions in the eyes:
• Lubrication
• Washing away foreign bodies
• Clearing the eye surface for better vision
• Preventing infections
• Keeping eyes healthy
Dry eyes can happen to everyone occasionally, but when it is chronic, many problems can occur. Chronic dry eyes are especially common in older adults but also in patients who have had LASIK surgery.
Tears are produced from glands around the eyelids. Tiny drainage ducts in the corners of the eyes carry away excess tears and send them into the sinuses. When the balance between production and drainage occurs, dry eyes are the result.
There are many causes possible causes of dry eyes:
• Age
• Dry climates
• Wind
• Certain medications
• Riding on airplanes
• Bike riding
• Air-conditioning
• Prolonged computer use (staring at a screen decreases blinking)
Over-the-counter treatment can help ease mild dry eye symptoms and help lubricate the eyes on a short-term basis with artificial tears (eye drops). While the artificial tears can provide some immediate relief, they are basically just a Band-Aid and will provide no real improvement for a chronic case.
