Lasik Consultation

LASIK surgery is becoming an extremely popular type of vision correction. LASIK is an in-office surgical procedure that corrects impaired vision in patients with astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness. Also referred to as refractory or laser eye surgery, this procedure provides better vision than at any other time in optical technology.

LASIK stands for laser in situ keratomileusis. A laser is used to reshape the tissue underneath the cornea to refocus the light entering the eye onto the back of the eye. The refocused image is sharper and clearer than previously when transmitted to the brain, ending the need for glasses or contacts. The laser correction is accomplished after a flap is opened in the outer layer of the cornea. The flap is carefully replaced after the reshaping is done. The entire procedure is accomplished in as little as 15 minutes and is essentially pain-free.

Numbing drops are used before the procedure as well as an oral medication to help the patient relax. Special safety glasses are worn for up to 24 hours after the procedure, and a short follow-up examination is typically given the following morning. Relaxation is prescribed for the rest of the day, stressing a nap would help the eyes begin healing.

Patients do not need glasses or contacts as soon as the procedure is done. It is possible to read a clock on the wall immediately. Patients are often amazed.
